West Rockland Street July Update
So what exactly do residents have to say at a neighborhood block meeting in Southwest Germantown? Check out our meeting minutes from the July block meeting for an inside look. Following block meetings, a printed copy of the full meeting minutes is distributed to each of the 46 households on W Rockland Street. Yes, that’s a lot of paper, but our block is old school and the best way to communicate is by pounding the pavement and flyering. Delivering a constant flow of information helps us keep an informed block. The notes are a straightforward rundown of everything that was discussed at the meeting.
The Block Meeting was held on July 15. Over 10 people attended. Future block meetings will be held the first week of each month from April to September. Enjoy the meeting notes.
BLOCK PARTY PROGRAM & ACTIVITIES
So far $105 has been collected for the block party. At the meeting the first choice attraction was the Waterslide. We will continue to collect funds for the block party. If you have an activity that you would like to host during the event (one idea was an arts & craft tent for 2 hours), please let us know! Please invite your friends & family out to the block party. We will hold a raffle again. Miss Angie is donating the small moon bounce for younger children again.
SAFETY OF CHILDREN
Please remind children that when Playstreet is over, it’s no longer safe to play freely in the street. Children should be careful crossing the street as well.
RACCOONS, POSSUMS & BUGS
There’s been an increased presence of these animals as well as waterbugs, roaches and maggots. Please see attached flyer for more information and tips on keeping these pests away.
Neighbors spoke with the young men in the car club with the yellow and white cars. Both men were very receptive to addressing block concerns about speeding and loud noise.
YARD MAINTENANCE TOOL LENDING LIBRARY
Residents discussed setting up a tool lending service that would include a weed whacker, hedge cutters, lawn mower and shovels.
PLAYSTREET – JUNE 24 to AUGUST 30
All children up to 18 years old can receive a free summer lunch & snack Monday to Friday until August 30. Residents on the top ¼ of block are asked to move their cars. This is not a requirement but would be nice to give the children more area to play! If you have an idea for an activity contact the Playstreet Leader Anon.
Curfew for children under 18 was discussed again. It was noted that children do not have to be completely in the house by the curfew times listed but should be on their own porches and keep the noise down. Lately children have been outside as late as 3 a.m. That is not safe and has caused a disturbance of the peace. Please see attached flyer with specific times and ages.
We will be passing around weed killer to spray on sidewalk weeds. Each resident can use it and pass it along to their neighbor. We will start at the bottom of the block with 74 and work through the block. Please hand to an adult directly because the weed killer is a strong chemical and should not be handled by children. Participation is optional.
TRAFFIC / SPEED BUMPS PETITION
We have requested help from our Councilwoman Cindy Bass. We have also requested a traffic study be done for our block by the Streets Dept. Please look out for the petition that we will submit from our block to the Councilwoman and Streets Department requesting help with slowing the traffic on W Rockland Street and making our block safer. Everyone at the block meeting signed it!
TWO MORE WEEKS UNTIL THE BLOCK PARTY…
